The Guardsmen
This is a unique spot. The route starts at the gate on the Tranquille Red Lake Road and follows the rough road up onto the Mara Bench. This road continues on to climb into Pruden Pass behind Mount Mara. It is sometimes used as a gradual route to the top of Mount Mara. Side trails also go out to the edge of the bluffs overlooking Tranquille Creek. One prominent side road leads to a point directly overlooking the Guardsmen, which are a series of tall hoodoos standing over both sides of Tranquille Canyon. When most people try to find the Guardsmen, they follow a gently sloping road/route to a point above, but the route down to the creek there is very steep. A much better route is to go further up the main road and then follow the large gully down to the river. There is a single track trail in the bottom of the gully, but it is a little hard to pick up from above. It does come out on the main road, but most people don’t find it on the way down. It is not all that steep to just wind down into the bottom of the gully form any point in that area (closer to the main road). Once in the gully, just follow it down to the bottom at the edge of the creek. Very prominent hoodoos tower over the creek on both sides. It is a special spot to linger on a hot summer day, wading into the creek, taking photos (bring a wide-angle lens), and exploring the goat trails around the rock features.
