Red Plateau Rambles (1)
The Red Plateau Forest Service Road breaks off the Red Lake Road near the parking area for the Pimple (N50 45.327 W120 31.440). It climbs the hill and has a few narrow spots but is generally a good road, although I wouldn’t recommend it in wet and muddy conditions. The road improves after it crests to the plateau. Once the terrain flattens out, you can pick a parking area (see the map) to access the sideroads and trails. This route starts at one of the road entrances marked on the map. A highlighter has been used to trace the routes as it travels south, then west, then south to Castle Butte. Print this map to take with you. Use a GPS if you have one (turn on tracking). There are many volcanic features in this area, lots of wildlife, ponds, and impressive views on the south end of the map. Its also a good area to get lost. Travel with a friend. Use a map and compass or GPS and return again for additional trips to enjoy and learn the area better.
