Coal Hill
This is not an easy area to describe or to offer route information. There are:
- lots of private property fences here and there with different and changing land owners
- mining claims
- bike routes
- old artifacts
When I first started exploring this area, there was easy access to the area and no signs about private property. One mine was still in operation on the hillside and there were open pits, mine shafts, horizontal shafts, rail beds, old cabins and shacks, and rusting equipment. Most of the mine shafts are now filled in, old buildings levelled and some fenced-off areas for pits. The interest of mountain bikers from the Aberdeen area saw lots of new faces up on the hill, but it also resulted in some new fences.
At this time, hikers, mountain bikers, and explorers have to start on a route, make choices at junctions, decide what to do about fences, and find a route.
To the top:
- Coming up from the end of Pineview Valley, take the old road that winds up the hillside.
- Near the top, you will encounter fences that may be up or down.
- You can work your way around the fences to the west or to the east.
- There are several routes you can take up or down.
To the Old Mines area:
- You can work your way west from Pineview or you can try the route from the bottom of the Lac Le Jeune Road as it wends its way upwards. On the west side of the Trans Mountain and Terrasen property, there is parking for a few cars. Take the route ahead for about 70m, then look for a single track to the right. Follow it until it picks up an old road to the plateau in about 2.5km.
- With a GPS, the parking area is N50, 39.854, W120 25.712
If you go the area:
- go quietly and respectfully
- respect cattle and fences
- the area is becoming increasingly more closed off because of intrusion, so leave no trace of your visit
