Dogwood Marshes
The Dogwood Marshes are a large bowl-shaped area near the Bush Lakes parking lot on the Lac le Jeune Road. There is grazing fence around these Crown lands, but a section of the fence has been removed for winter snowshoeing.
Drive up the Lac le Jeune Road and turn into the Bush Lakes parking area on the left. Go through the fence gap on the east side and follow the snowshoe tracks through the bowl and forest slopes above. The route drops into the basin where there are a series of ponds surrounded by red ossier dogwood.
We found many trails already stomped in by snowshoers. All of the frozen ponds can be crossed in winter.
The forest surrounding the marshes has been logged, but has been replanted and all the trees are now of juvenile height. Many tracks had been cut through the open forest.
This basin is flanked by the Lac le Jeune Road on the west side, the McConnell Forest Service Road on the east, and the hill up to McConnell Lake on the south.
Up on the more open hillsides, aspens rise above the newly-planted forest.
A loop through the Dogwood Marshes Basin is about 4 km. This area is suitable for all abilities and one of the most enjoyable snowshoes of our area.
